In this DVD, first filmed in 1996, experienced teachers explore ways that basic musical concepts such as rhythm, tempo and dynamics can be related to dance through the Character & Free Movement sections of a class for children.
Throughout the video, examples of simple music notation are shown alongside the dance, making it easy to understand how steps, music, rhythm and metre interact. The inclusion of Character barre exercises and additional centre work related to the Royal Academy of Dance Graded Examinations syllabus make this DVD an invaluable aid for improving Character dance teaching skills. The Free Movement section includes an in-depth analysis of the Grade 5 Study, which brings together many of the musical concepts behind Free Movement introduced in the Graded Syllabus.
